Egypt, Italy sign EU-backed protocol to boost food security, wheat storage

Egypt’s Holding Company for Silos and Storage and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) signed a cooperation agreement on Thursday December 11, 2025 to modernize the country’s wheat storage infrastructure and enhance the efficiency of its national food supply chain.

The signing ceremony was attended by Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk.

The EU-backed deal, implemented through AICS, will fund the construction of five field silos, each with a capacity of 10,000 tons, in several governorates: one each in Dakahlia, Damietta, and Beheira, and two in Sharqia. The agreement also includes upgrading the ministry’s digital system to enable real-time tracking of national wheat stocks, improving data accuracy, monitoring efficiency, and supporting strategic planning.

The planned projects aim to strengthen storage efficiency, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance government oversight of the supply chain.

“The agreement reflects Egypt’s clear vision to modernize its food storage and supply systems,” the Ministry said in a statement, noting the EU and Italian commitment to supporting sustainable development and expanding partnerships in the sector.
