Egypt purchased about 500 thsd tons of wheat from the Black Sea region
Egypt’s state wheat-buying agency Mostakbal Misr has booked around half a million tons of wheat from the Black Sea region for delivery in December and January, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The deals include 200,000 tons from Russia, 150,000 tons from Bulgaria, and more than 130,000 tons from Ukraine, the source said. The agency is also in talks to purchase another 500,000 tons of wheat from various origins, with an agreement expected to be reached by early December.
Egypt remains the world’s largest wheat importer, and its purchases are closely watched as indicators of global demand and competitiveness among suppliers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasts Egypt’s wheat imports will reach a record 13 million tons this season.
The North African nation has already been on a buying spree. In October, Egypt purchased about 1 million tons of wheat sourced from Black Sea countries, as well as from France and Kazakhstan. Deliveries are expected through early December.
Mostakbal Misr took over responsibility for government wheat imports late last year, replacing the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC). According to the source, Egypt’s current wheat reserves are sufficient until the end of February 2026.
