Denmark continues to see an upward trend in pig numbers
Contrary to the overall trend in the European Union, the pig population in Denmark continues to grow.
As of January 1, 2026, a total of 12.3 million pigs were being raised in the country. This is an increase of 690,000 pigs, or 6.0%, compared to the previous year’s survey.
This is the highest pig population in Denmark in four years, following a sharp decline between 2022 and 2023. However, it has not yet reached the 2022 level, when the total population was 13.2 million animals.
Compared to the same period last year, the number of breeding sows increased by 1.4%, reaching 956,000. The number of piglets and fattening pigs also increased: the number of weaners weighing less than 50 kilograms increased by 5.8%, reaching 5.77 million, and the number of fattening pigs weighing 50 kilograms or more increased by 10.9%, reaching 2.78 million heads.
