Cultivated areas in Georgia are shrinking again
The area under crops in Georgia is decreasing again. This is evidenced by preliminary data from the National Statistics Service.
In particular, the area under spring crops in 2025 amounted to 129.7 thousand hectares. At the same time, for the same period last year it was 130.3 thousand hectares, in 2023 the sowing area of spring crops was 137.1 thousand hectares, in the same period of 2022 – 148.7 thousand hectares, etc.
In addition, according to official data, in January-June of this year, the sowing area of grain and leguminous crops (wheat, barley, rye, oats, corn, legumes) was 90.1 thousand hectares, in the same period last year – 90.9 thousand hectares, in the spring of 2023 – 94.4 thousand hectares, and in the same period of 2022 – 100.3 thousand hectares.
This year, the area of potatoes and vegetable gardens amounted to 27.3 thousand hectares against 25.7 thousand hectares for the same period last year, 27.8 thousand hectares in the spring of 2023 and 29.7 thousand hectares for the same period in 2022.
Under other crops – 12.4 thousand hectares against 13.8 thousand hectares for the same period last year, 15.9 thousand hectares in the spring of 2023 and 18.7 thousand hectares in 2022.
Experts in this field attribute the reduction in sown areas to a decrease in prices for agricultural products. According to them, in the current conditions, farmers have no motivation to increase their harvest, since low prices have already led to financial problems.
Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The event will focus on strategic directions for the agricultural sector through 2030, including investments, energy independence, processing, and exports of high-value products.
