Corn to become the top export crop for the US in 2025

Corn has established itself as the top export crop for the United States in 2025, with nearly 45 million tonnes shipped worldwide since January, according to AXSMarine data. This represents a significant 46.8% increase from the previous year, making 2025 one of the most successful years for US corn exports, only slightly behind the record of more than 46 million tonnes shipped in 2021 during the same period. Corn now accounts for 53.8% of total US grain shipments, underscoring its dominance in the market.
In comparison, soybeans, previously the top export crop for the United States, are in second place with around 22.8 million tonnes shipped this year. This represents a modest 2.1% increase from 2024, largely driven by strong shipments in January and February. However, soybean exports have struggled in the following months, with a 19.2% decline in April and a 38.1% decline in July compared to the same months last year, indicating a volatile performance.
Wheat ranks third among U.S. grain exports, with more than 12.2 million tonnes shipped since the start of 2025, up 5.2% from last year. The strong performance of corn, combined with steady wheat exports, contributed to a 16.2% increase in overall U.S. grain shipments compared to 2024. This surge underscores corn’s key role in the development of U.S. agricultural exports, allowing it to maintain its lead for the second consecutive year.
Looking ahead, seasonal grain shipments are expected to increase as the U.S. enters the harvest season. According to Philippe Govey, BIMCO’s shipping analysis manager, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is forecasting a 6% increase in corn production in 2025. In contrast, wheat and soybean production are likely to decline slightly, which could further strengthen corn’s position in the export market.
The strength of US corn exports reflects both strong global demand and favorable production conditions. As the harvest season progresses, the US grain market is poised for further growth, and corn is likely to maintain its dominance in the global trade arena until the end of 2025.
