Coceral expects wheat and rapeseed production growth in EU and UK
Grain trade association Coceral on Thursday forecast that soft wheat production in the European Union and the UK will rise to 140.4 million tons in 2025 after a low yield of 125.5 million tons this year.
As for oilseeds, total EU and UK rapeseed production is forecast to rise by 2 million tons to 20.3 million tons by 2025, with Coceral citing a return to normal planting levels in Romania and Bulgaria, as well as recovering yields in France and Germany.
EU production alone is forecast to rise from 17.4 million tons to 19.5 million tons, while UK production is projected to fall from 915,000 tons to 775,000 tons, a continuation of the sharp decline of recent years.
Repeated heavy rains in Western Europe this year have disrupted wheat sowing and growth, leading to France’s lowest wheat crop since the 1980s.
In its initial forecast for next year’s crop, Coceral predicted soft wheat production in the 27 EU countries would rise to 126.5 million tons from 114.1 million tons this year, while the UK crop was expected to rise to 13.8 million tons from 11.4 million tons.
The projected increase was “mainly due to an increase in planted area and a return to normal yields in Western Europe after a disappointing 2024 crop,” Coceral reported on soft wheat.
Other agronomy experts also expect a recovery in wheat production next year, helped by a dry end to the fall that boosted planting activity.
As for barley, Coceral forecasts total EU and UK production next year at 59.7 million tons, up from 57.3 million tons this year.
This figure includes an expected EU barley crop of 51.9 million tons versus 50.4 million tons, and a UK crop of 7.8 million tons versus 7.0 million tons this year.
EU corn production in 2025 is forecast at 61.9 million tons compared to 60.2 million tons, with a sharp increase expected in Southeast Europe after losses due to drought and heat this year.
