The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) welcomed the announcement by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock that Chile has recognised the state of Paraná as a foot-and-mouth disease-free area without vaccination, according to a recent press release. ABPA cited the information released by MAPA, following publication in the Chilean Official Gazette.

Paraná’s recognition is expected to bring new momentum to the sector’s trade. Until now, only Santa Catarina had exported pork to the Chilean market under a pre-listing agreement, which grants broad market access to eligible Brazilian states.

“This is another achievement by Minister Carlos Fávaro and Secretaries Luis Rua (International Relations) and Carlos Goulart (Defence) for Brazil’s pork export chain, which is projecting record exports and should be positively influenced by this new recognition,” said ABPA president Ricardo Santin.

Chile, the fourth-largest destination for Brazilian pork exports, imported 55,900 tonnes of pork in the first half of this year, generating revenue of US$140 million. Compared to the same period last year, shipments rose 11.1% in volume and 30% in revenue.
