Canadian farmers will increase canola crops at the expense of wheat
The area under canola, barley, soybeans and corn in Canada in the next sowing season will increase due to the reduction in sowings of wheat, oats, lentils and peas. The data from the report of Statistics Canada on March 5 was reported by The Western producer.
The forecast is based on a survey of farmers. Subsequent surveys may adjust the picture.
The area under wheat may decrease by 1.1% from the 2025 level to 26.7 million acres (10.81 million hectares). The main decrease in the area occurred in the fall of 2025, when winter crops were sown by 6.7%. Spring wheat crops will remain at about the same level as last year.
Canola will occupy 1% more than in 2025, about 21.8 million acres (8.82 million hectares). The survey was conducted before China lifted tariffs on Canadian canola, so experts expect actual plantings to exceed 22 million acres (8.9 million hectares).
Soybeans are expected to grow 5.9 million acres (2.39 million hectares), a 2.9% increase. The main increase will come from Manitoba, which will grow 12.9% more land than in 2025.
Barley in Canada will grow 6.4 million acres (2.59 million hectares), a 5% increase from a year earlier. Oats will grow 2.9 million acres (1.17 million hectares), a 3.1% decrease from 2025.
Canadian farmers are expected to grow 3.8 million acres (1.58 million hectares) of corn, a 1.47% increase from 2025. The largest increase in corn plantings is planned for Ontario, up 5.4%.
Most pulses will decrease their area. Lentils will decrease by 5.5% to 4.1 million acres (1.66 million hectares), peas by 12.3% to 3.1 million hectares (1.25 million hectares), other pulses by 30.7% to 295,000 acres (119,380 hectares). And chickpeas alone will increase by 6.3% to 575,000 acres (232,690 hectares).
