According to updated data from StatCan, commercial canola production in Canada reached a record 21.8 million tonnes this year, 2.6 million tonnes more than last year.

However, canola cultivation area was slightly lower than last year’s level – 8.7 million hectares versus 8.85 million hectares.

Meanwhile, the soybean harvest was below preliminary estimates, totaling 6.8 million tonnes from 2.32 million hectares, compared to a target of 7.6 million tonnes from 2.29 million hectares in 2024.

Analysts also raised their wheat production estimate to a new high of 40 million tonnes, compared to 35.9 million tonnes in 2024. The grain sown area is estimated at 10.62 million hectares, virtually flat compared to last year.

The barley and oat harvest estimates increased by 1.6 million tonnes and 0.6 million tonnes, respectively, to 9.73 million tonnes and 3.92 million tonnes, more than offsetting a 0.5 million tonne decline in corn production (to 14.87 million tonnes).

As previously reported, Canadian canola exports have been declining steadily. Total oilseed exports since the start of the season (August-October) amounted to 1.4 million tonnes, compared to 3 million tonnes last year. Increased shipments to Japan, Mexico, and the EU were unable to offset the sharp decline in exports to China.
