Bulgarian farmers need market analysis at the start of the harvest
Bulgaria’s 2026 harvest campaign has begun, and for farmers, not only crop production forecasts but also a clear understanding of new-crop marketing prospects are becoming increasingly important. Producers need practical answers: which export markets the country can target, who their main competitors will be in tenders, and what Black Sea logistics costs may look like.
At the official opening of the harvest in the village of Drenov, government representatives mainly spoke about traditions, food security, producer support and crop prospects. Bulgaria’s Ministry of Agriculture forecasts wheat production at 6.5–6.8 million tonnes and barley output at just over 1 million tonnes, but export strategy and price risks were not central to the discussion.
At the same time, Bulgaria’s grain sector depends heavily on foreign markets. In the 2024/25 marketing year, the country exported around 5.63 million tonnes of wheat, or 77% of its harvest, with most shipments going to destinations outside the EU. Algeria, Egypt, Spain, Thailand and Greece were among the key buyers, while Bulgaria competes for these markets primarily with suppliers from Ukraine and Russia.
This is precisely when specialised market analysis from UkrAgroConsult becomes particularly valuable for local producers. In its latest review, the company highlighted Bulgaria’s strengthening position in barley markets across the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East, including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Morocco. This approach gives farmers more than broad assessments: it provides guidance on potential buyers, competitors and marketing opportunities.
