Bulgaria is set to receive its first shipments of Argentine sunflower seeds in the coming weeks. According to market sources, the first vessel carrying about 40,000 tonnes is currently off the coast of Morocco and is expected to arrive at Bulgarian ports in early March. In total, ten ships with Argentine sunflower seeds are scheduled to arrive between late February and early March.

If all shipments are delivered on schedule, Bulgaria will import around 400,000 tonnes of Argentine sunflower seeds. Combined with shipments to Romania, the total inflow to the region could reach nearly half a million tonnes, significantly affecting the raw material balance in the Balkans.

With domestic sunflower seed production in Bulgaria at roughly 1.5 million tonnes, the imports will account for about a quarter of the national harvest. This makes foreign supplies an important factor in shaping prices and competition in the local market.

Argentine sunflower seeds are generally cheaper than domestic supplies, making them attractive for Bulgarian companies and processors. The lower price, along with strong demand, supports the appeal of imports despite the availability of local production.

Another factor driving imports is limited domestic supply — local farmers are holding back sales in anticipation of higher prices following weaker harvests in Bulgaria, Romania, and Ukraine.
