Brazil: Safrinha Corn Production in Mato Grosso to Decline 3.4% in 2024/25

The 2023/24 safrinha corn production in Mato Grosso totaled 47.17 million tons according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea). This represents a decline of 10.1% from the prior year, but it was still the second largest safrinha corn crop in the state’s history.

Farmers in Mato Grosso planted 6.8 million hectares (16.79 million acres) of safrinha corn in 2023/24, which was down 9.2%. The reduction was due to low corn prices, high cost of production, and a delay in corn planting caused by a delay in soybean harvesting. The average corn yield in 2023/24 was 115.5 sacks per hectare (110.1 bu/ac).

For the 2024/25 safrinha corn crop in Mato Grosso, Imea is estimating that farmers will plant 6.79 million hectares (16.77 million acres), or a decline of 0.14%. The reduced acreage is once again attributed to low corn prices and a delay in soybean planting due to hot and dry conditions.

Imea is expecting a corn yield of 111.7 sacks per hectare in 2024/25 (106.5 bu/ac), which is the average yield of the last three years. The 2024/25 safrinha production is estimated at 45.54 million tons, which represents a reduction of 1.63 million tons or 3.4%.

Mato Grosso is Brazil’s largest safrinha corn producing state and the safrinha crop represents approximately 75% of Brazil’s total corn production.
