Brazil: Rains help with wheat planting in Paraná, says Deral bulletin
Recent rains in Paraná helped with the planting of wheat, which reached 14% of the area. According to the weekly bulletin of the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), this weather condition moistened the soil and favored the work.
The areas already sown are concentrated in the North of Paraná, within normal limits, but should soon expand to other regions of the state.
Current wheat prices are close to R$80 per bag, slightly above the March average (R$76,82), but not enough to encourage producers, given that planting intentions were revised downwards in April. At the end of the sowing season, 886 thousand hectares are expected to be planted with wheat, an area smaller than the 910 thousand expected in March and 22% less than the 1,13 million dedicated to the crop in 2024.
“The South region only has its peak planting in June and some producers may still change their minds and dedicate larger areas to the crop, but this scenario seems even more unlikely given what is observed in the field. In addition to corn, other winter crops should gain space over areas previously cultivated with wheat, such as barley and oats,” says Deral.
The bulletin also addresses corn from Paraná. Crop conditions for the second 2024/25 harvest remained stable compared to the previous week. Of the 2,7 million hectares planted in this harvest, 63% are in good field condition and have the potential to reach the expected average productivity.
“We have 23% in average condition and this area may or may not reach the expected production. Finally, we have 14% of the area in poor condition and this should reflect in productivity below expectations, generating potential losses”, informs the document prepared by Deral technicians.
In the last 10 days, there has been rain in all regions of the state and this has possibly helped to stabilize the situation in the countryside and prevent crops from worsening.
On a national level, Conab estimates that more than 120 million tons of corn will be produced in both the first and second harvests. The Central-West is the main producer, accounting for 57% of the total.
