Australia’s wheat exports rose 46% in May
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australia’s wheat exports increased to 2.086 mln tons in May, up 46% from April.
The largest bulk wheat destinations were the Philippines (463.9 thsd tons), Indonesia (416.3 thsd tons), and Yemen (316.4 thsd tons). Containerized wheat shipments were led by Taiwan (24.5 thsd tons), Thailand (22.5 thsd tons), and Malaysia (15.4 thsd tons).
May also saw the season’s only shipment of durum wheat to Italy.
According to Lachstock Consulting, Australia’s wheat export pace in the 2025/26 marketing year continues to lag expectations as Australian wheat becomes less competitive with the approaching Northern Hemisphere harvest. The company estimates that lower exports have increased ending stocks by 630 thsd tons, while domestic demand remains subdued.
Lachstock forecasts Australia’s new wheat crop, to be harvested between October and December, at 31 mln tons. Meanwhile, the USDA projects 2026/27 wheat production at 28.0 mln tons, down from 35.985 mln tons in the current season, with exports forecast at 22.0 mln tons versus 25.0 mln tons this season.
