Australian Jan chickpea, lentil exports up from Dec
AUSTRALIA exported 186,798 tonnes of chickpeas in January, up 74 per cent from the December figure, while lentil exports for the month were up 4pc to 98,071t, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Bangladesh on 137,045t bought 73pc of the January-shipment chickpeas, with Pakistan on 33,480t the second-biggest market.
Bangladesh was also the volume buyer of lentils with 33,524t, followed closely by Egypt on 31,281t.
Combination cargoes of faba beans and lentils to Egypt, and chickpeas, lentils and wheat to Bangladesh have been highly supportive of shipment volumes as containers continue to be in short supply.
Trade sources report logistics problems and the high cost of doing container business have pushed a larger-than-normal tonnage of chickpeas and lentils into the bulk market.
