Australia exports 62,708t canola in October
Australia exported 62,708 tonnes of canola in October, down from 158,849t shipped in September, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Japan on 57,293t was the largest market by far for October-shipped canola, followed by Malaysia on 1951t and Nepal on 1485t, with the monthly total well down on the 180,073t shipped in October 2024, when cargoes to Belgium and France drove volume.
The low October 2025 figure reflects the usual rundown in stocks ahead of new-crop making its way in volume out of southern Australian ports in November.
This year, the November data will show the first bulk cargo since 2020 of Australian canola heading to China, with more likely to follow in coming months.
In its most recent supply-and-demand report released last month, Lachstock Consulting said another 10 cargoes have been booked to follow what has widely been called a trial shipment.
“The world has more canola than expected, with Australia, Canada and Europe all delivering bigger crops, and Ukraine exports picking up pace,” the report said.
“That removes the immediate supply squeeze, but the challenge now shifts to execution — moving WA’s large GM export program, managing wide east-west spreads, and finding near-term import demand in markets that look mostly covered.
“Short-term pressure is likely, but biodiesel growth, record crush demand and new GM access into Pakistan provide solid medium-term support.”
