Australia exported record volumes of grain in 2023/24 MY
In 2022/23 MY, Australia set the new record in grain exports, having shipped 47.81 mln tonnes, up 10.6% compared to the previous high of 43.22 mln tonnes last year, Grain Central reports.
It is noted that the increase in exports was due to the growth of grain production in the country over the past three years and the growth of export capacity and logistics in Australia.
Australia exported the most wheat in 2022/23 MY – 66.4% of the total volume, reaching the record 31.77 mln tonnes (+15.7% y/y). China was the main buyer, importing (7.59 mln tonnes).
Last season, Australia exported 7.08 mln tonnes of barley, which is 14.8% of the total grain exports from the country and 11.8% down from the previous MY. Out of this volume, feed barley exports amounted to 5.93 mln tonnes, and malting barley – 1.15 mln tonnes. As for the importers, in the absence of deliveries to China during 11 months of the season, Saudi Arabia retained its leadership in the imports of Australian barley, having purchased 1.83 mln tonnes of the grain (3.18 mln tonnes in 2021/22 MY). It is followed by Thailand (0.69 mln tonnes), Vietnam (0.61 mln tonnes) and China (0.43 mln tonnes), which returned to the market after the import duty was suspended in mid-August.
The export volumes of canola from Australia in 2022/23 season reached the record 6.16 mln tonnes (12.9% of the total agricultural exports). The European Union remains the main export destination with 3.2 mln tons.
Total Australian sorghum exports amounted to 2.81 million tons. However, it accounts for only 5.9% of the total grain export program, which is also 25.9% more than in the previous MY.
