Argentina expects corn area to grow by 15–20% in MY 2025/26
Farmers in Argentina’s central agro-regions plan to increase the area under corn by 15-20% in the new season compared to the previous one, the Rosario Grain Exchange reported. The corn sowing campaign in this key agricultural country for world trade starts in September. Last season, 8.3 million hectares of corn were sown in Argentina, and the harvest amounted to 48.5 million tons.
Exchange experts explain this change by high moisture reserves in the soil for early sowings and a decrease in the attractiveness of soybeans due to reduced profitability. Corn and soybeans are summer crops and compete for sowing areas, and the soybean sowing campaign begins in October.
At the same time, analysts warn of the risk of a new outbreak of the grasshopper, a pest that carries diseases dangerous to corn. In the 2023/24 season, the insect caused significant damage, especially in the north of the country, where warmer conditions favor its spread.
Regarding the 2025/26 wheat crop, for which sowing has already been completed, the exchange reported sufficient moisture reserves and maintained the harvest forecast at 20 million tons. The wheat harvest in Argentina will begin in November.
