The United States Cattlemen’s Beef Association (USCA) sent a letter to President Trump last week:

“We recognize the global challenges facing economic policy and international trade. However, American cattle producers, who have endured decades of adversity, should not be sacrificed for larger geopolitical gains. Expanding beef imports from Argentina would threaten the very foundation of U.S. beef production and the heart of rural America. American producers would lose out in any deal with Argentina.

Today’s beef prices are not a byproduct of rampant inflation or market manipulation. They are the result of years of industry decline, a 75-year low in the domestic cow herd, and a sharp rise in farmers’ production costs. For the first time in years, cattle producers are finally receiving prices that reflect the true costs of production—a long-overdue correction, not an unintended sign of a crisis.”

The letter also states: “Furthermore, American beef remains one of the safest, highest-quality protein products—and the best value—available to American families. Even with recent price increases, the time it takes the average American to earn a pound of ground beef has remained unchanged since the 1980s: about 12 minutes of work—a benchmark for affordability that few foods can match. Dollar for dollar, nothing beats American beef in nutrition, safety, or consumer trust; today, families can choose quality beef for about the price of a daily $5 latte.

During the economic downturn, American consumers have proven that demand for beef is inelastic—it stands the test of time and wallet. In fact, current demand for beef in the U.S. is at a 40-year high, reflecting beef’s enduring place at the center of the American table.”
