Algeria Wheat Production Forecast Raised 10% in 2022-23
Algeria’s wheat production forecast in the marketing year beginning July through June 2023 has been raised by 10% from an earlier estimate, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.
Production is estimated to increase to 3.3 million metric tons from 3.0 million tons estimated in July due to improved yield per hectare on average weather conditions, the USDA said late Friday in its annual Algeria grain and feed report update.
Production is expected to increase by 38% from 2.4 million tons the prior year.
Wheat imports have also been raised by 2.5% to 8.3 million tons in the current year, it said.
Algeria’s imports from Ukraine and Russia represent only 4% and therefore the Ukrainian war isn’t having an effect on imports, the USDA said.
Algeria relies primarily on imported wheat from the EU, France, Germany, Spain, Canada, the U.S., Argentina, Uruguay, and Mexico, it said.
Algeria’s wheat consumption is expected to increase slightly to 11.15 million tons in 2022-23, up from 11.10 million the prior year, it said.
Wheat is the major staple food and accounts for 60% of the food ration in Algeria, it said.
Algeria is among the largest consumers of wheat in the world, the USDA said.
