Agriculture: Egypt Aims to Raise Wheat Self-sufficiency to 65% by 2025

The Egyptian government places at the top of the priorities of the development plan for the year 22/23 achieving food security.

And in light of the programs aimed at improving agricultural productivity, it is expected to increase the cropped area in 2023/2022 to exceed 19 million acres, and it is targeted to increase the productivity of sugar beet from 22 tons/acre to 25 tons/acre, sugar cane from 50 tons/acre to 52 tons/acre, wheat from 18 ardabas/acre to 20 ardabas/acre, and citrus from 11 tons/acre to 14 tons/acre.

Within the framework of the 2023/2022 plan, it is targeted to continue raising the rates of self-sufficiency in strategic crops that meet the basic needs of citizens, in light of the efforts made to increase the cultivated areas and improve their productivity.

According to the plan the Ministry of Agriculture plans to achieve the goal of self-sufficiency, it is aimed to raise the sufficiency rates of wheat from 45% in 2020 to 65% by 2025, and of yellow corn from 24% to 32% during the same period, and of beans from 30% to about 40% Lentils from 2% to 16%, oil crops from 3% to 10%, and red meat from 57% to 65%.
