Rainfall last week favored central Brazil with less rain in far southern and far northern regions of Brazil. The forecast is calling for more rain in central Brazil and increased chances of rain in northern Brazil, but dryer conditions in southern Brazil. The summer rains always arrive last in northeastern and northern Brazil, so it is not unusual that they finally arrived in November.

A dryer forecast for southern Brazil needs to be monitored. It is not a problem today, but it could become a concern in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, western Parana, and southern Mato Grosso do Sul. The forecast is mostly dry this week in southern Brazil with increased chances of rain in the 6-10 day period.

Soybeans in Brazil were 68.3% planted as of late last week compared to 61.2% last year and 70.0% average according to Patria Agronegocios. This represents an advance of 14.3% for the week. Planting will now be focused on states which are traditionally the last to plant such as Rio Grande do Sul and northeastern Brazil. The crop is generally developing normally.

Farmers in Mato Grosso had planted 93.7% of their soybeans as of late last week compared to 91.8% last year and 91.7% average according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics. This represents an advance of 14% for the week. After a slow start to planting due to dry conditions, farmers in the state rapidly caught up to average. Below is the soybean planting progress in Mato Grosso as of November 8, 2024 from Imea.

Farmers in the state of Parana in southern Brazil have planted 85% of their 2024/25 soybeans compared to 73% last year according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). This represents an 11% advancement for the week. Planting is advanced this year due to favorable weather and less winter wheat in the state. With less winter wheat, farmers did not have to wait for the wheat to be harvested before they planted their soybeans.

A few soybeans had to be replanted and the crop is 16% germinating, 80% in vegetative development, 4% flowering and rated 100% in good condition. With early soybean planting, farmers in the state should have ample time to plant a second crop of corn within the ideal planting window next January and February.

Emater reported that soybeans in Rio Grande do Sul were 23% planted as of late last week compared to 13% last year and 24% average. This represents an advance of 13% for the week. Soybeans that were planted between October 20th to 23rd germinated within 5-7 days and have uniform emergence.
