2024/25 Argentina Corn Estimate Lowered 1.0 mt to 49.0 Million
The 2024/25 Argentina corn estimate was lowered 1.0 million tons to 49.0 million.
There were a few showers in western and southwestern Argentina over the weekend with most of the country remaining dry. Temperatures were in the mid-90s to low 100s and they are forecasted to increase this week to the upper 90s to mid-100s. The forecast for this week is for limited showers across Argentina and declining soil moisture. The hot temperatures and limited rainfall will further stress crop growth.
Dry weather thus far has impacted corn more than the soybeans. Corn that was planted in October was well into grain filling when rain turned off, so the dry weather should have minimal impact. Corn that was planted in October is in the middle of pollination and will be impacted by the hot and dry conditions. Corn that was planted in December is approaching pre-pollination and will need additional moisture to avoid pollination problems.
The southern core area of northern Buenos Aires and southern Santa Fe has been impacted the most by the dry weather. The corn was doing fine until it was not. The 2024/25 Argentina corn estimate was reduced 1.0 million tons to 49.0 million and if rain is not received soon, it will continue to decline.
Corn in Argentina was 91.6% planted as of late last week which represents an advance of 4.2% for the week. The major area left to plant is far northern Argentina where the corn is approximately 45% planted. Early planted corn maintains a high yield potential while intermediate planted corn is experiencing moisture stress and yield losses as the corn pollinates under extreme heat and short soil moisture. The best soil moisture is in western Argentina. Below is the corn planting progress in Argentina for January 8, 2025 from the Buenos Aires Grain exchange.
