2024/25 Argentina Corn 41% Planted, Up 1.9% for the Week

Rainfall last week and over the weekend favored eastern Buenos Aires and central Argentina. The rain improved soil moisture for corn and soybean planting and emergence. Light showers are expected across Argentina during the 6-10 day period which should favor continued planting.
Corn planting in Argentina was 41.3% as of late last week which represents an advance of 1.9% for the week. In the core areas, the corn is 75-80% planted with 40-60% planted in southern Argentina and less than 5% planted in northern Argentina. Now that the calendar has turned to December, farmers in Argentina will pick up the pace of planting their late corn.
Corn acreage in Argentina is also uncertain. The USDA is estimating the corn acreage at 6.4 million hectares and the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange is estimating 6.3 million hectares. The rainfall and the soil moisture have improved and there are fewer corn leafhoppers than last year. As a result, farmers may end up planting more corn than anticipating and subsequently fewer soybeans.
The corn estimate in Argentina was left unchanged this week at 48.0 million tons, but the estimate may move higher if farmers decide to plant more late corn than what was originally anticipated.
