2022/23 First Corn Crop in Parana 91% Planted

Farmers in Parana took advantage of a break in the wet weather last week to advance their spring planting. Parana had planted 91% of the first corn crop as of earlier this week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). The corn is 12% germinating, 88% in vegetative development and the corn is rated 1% poor, 13% average, and 86% good.

In some areas of western Parana, the corn planting will be delayed even further until after the soybeans are planted because farmers are preferring to plant soybeans so they will have time to plant a second crop of corn after the soybeans are harvested.

The soybeans in Parana are 67% planted with 37% germinating and 63% in vegetative development. The soybeans are rated 1% poor, 4% fair, and 95% good.

The wheat harvest advanced in Parana to 72% complete. Disappointing yields and low-quality grain are being reported in many regions due to excessive rainfall during September and October.

Wetness at harvest is a common problem for wheat producers in southern Brazil. That is why the Brazilian research service, Embrapa, has emphasized the development of new wheat varieties suitable for planting in the cerrado regions of central Brazil. Traditionally, nearly all of Brazil’s wheat is produced in the three most southern states of Parana, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.
