Cargill invests $15m in cattle supplements plant in India
Cargill has invested $15 million in a new plant in India which will manufacture supplements for cattle that claim to improve milk productivity.
Located in Kurkumbh, Maharashtra, the high-pressure hydrogenation plant will manufacture bypass fat, a health and nutrition supplement for dairy cattle, launched under its Carfe brand.
The facility, which has an annual capacity of 35,000 tons, intends to address the country’s need for enhanced milk production to boost farmer income and global competitiveness of the Indian dairy sector.
According to Cargill, its Carfe brand has proven to substantially improve the quality of nutrition for dairy cattle, resulting in better reproductive health and milk production.
The supplement is already available in developed dairy cattle markets worldwide and will now be locally manufactured at Cargill’s new bioindustrial plant and made available to dairy farmers and feed manufacturers in India. 50 jobs will be created as a result of the investment.
In 2017, Cargill announced that it will invest $250 million in India over the next five years including in its animal nutrition business. Earlier this year, the company opened a chocolate manufacturing plant in India.
“India is a key growth market for Cargill and line with our commitment to the country, this marks a continuation of our investment in India,” said Kurtis Miller, global managing director, industrial segment at Cargill Bioindustrial.
“By building upon our operations at this facility, we will increase our regional footprint and enhance our local capabilities to better support the needs of our local customers as well as multi-national customers across the globe.”
The Maharashtra plant will also manufacture specialty vegetable oil-based waxes for industrial application, which has application in the tyre, plastic and candle industry.
