85% of barley potential has already been sold this marketing year by November 20. Record high exports were seen in the first months of the season. August witnessed the highest monthly export volume in Ukraine’s history – 1315 KMT. This was 21% above the five-year average.
Shipments during last months of the season may even fall below the lows of recent years.
The depletion of stocks will lead to a slowdown in barley exports. This will happen noticeably earlier than in previous seasons because MY 2020/21 features high Chinese demand along with shrunk Ukrainian production, UkrAgroConsult reports.
China almost tripled purchases and topped the list of major importers of Ukrainian barley, with a 67% share gained.
In November, the USDA raised its forecast for global barley imports by 1 MMT (27.3 MMT), mostly at the expense of China (increased by 1.5 MMT, to 6.5 MMT – up 9% on the year). Imports to the Chinese market exceed all expectations.
Major exporters supplied 3.69 MMT to China in July-September 2020/21, or 85% more than a year earlier.
