Wintering of winter crops in Ukraine was generally good
The condition of winter grain crops in Ukraine at the end of the calendar winter is relatively good and satisfactory. This conclusion was reached by the experts of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine in their monthly review.
At the same time, up to 5-8% of plants were killed in some fields (not necessarily due to direct frost), which is common even under more favorable weather conditions.
“If winter crops resume active vegetation earlier than usual, and the subsequent hydrothermal regime meets their needs, there are good reasons to make preliminary forecasts for the expected yield, which will be close to the average long-term indicators,” the report says.
The scientists also stated that today a significant limiting factor for the growth of plant productivity is insufficient precipitation during most of the winter period, and therefore relatively low reserves of agronomically valuable moisture in the soil, which in dry weather can lead to undesirable consequences in the future.
Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The event will focus on strategic directions for the agricultural sector through 2030, including investments, energy independence, processing, and exports of high-value products.
