Wheat production in Russia declines for the third year in a row
Wheat production in Russia has been declining for three years after a lack of rain delayed planting, Bloomberg reports.
The wheat harvest in 2025 is expected to reach 80.1 million tons, according to consulting company SovEcon. This would be the smallest harvest since the 2021/22 season, putting pressure on already tight global stocks.
“High yields from the country have helped ease supply problems in recent years after other key growing regions such as the US and Europe saw low production. The market dominance of cheap Russian crops has helped bring prices down from record highs in 2022 and continues to put pressure on global futures markets,” the publication writes.
However, dry weather has significantly delayed sowing, which is expected to lead to a reduction in acreage and lower yields next season.
Despite the fact that the production forecast was made nine months before the harvest, unfavorable conditions may continue to hamper development. Nevertheless, consulting company IKAR predicts production of 81 to 85 million tons after the recent rains.
“The poor condition of winter wheat raises concerns about the increased risk of winter crops dying,” wrote Andrey Syzov, managing director of SovEcon.
