US President threatens to impose 250% tariff on dairy products against Canada
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on Canadian lumber and dairy products against Canada. The tariffs are 250%, CNN reports.
On the eve, Trump, on the contrary, offered Canada a one-month delay in imposing a 25% tariff.
“Canada has been ripping us off on lumber and dairy for years,” Trump said in the Oval Office on March 7, referring to Canada’s 250% tariff on dairy exports from the United States. In response, the US leader said that America would match these tariffs dollar for dollar.
“We can do it today or we can wait until Monday or Tuesday. We’re going to charge the same fee. It’s not fair. It’s never been fair and they’ve treated our farmers badly,” Trump said.
- Trump ordered the imposition of 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as 20% tariffs on goods from China.
- In response, Canada also announced the introduction of 25% tariffs on American imports.
- At the time, the American president threatened to double the tariffs in response to Canada’s reaction, but it later became known that he agreed to postpone the introduction of tariffs until April 2. The same applies to Mexico.
