US pork exports on track for annual record
September pork exports totaled 238,047 metric tons (mt), up 8% from a year ago, and the value increased 6% to $685.1 million. For the first three quarters of the year, pork exports were 5% higher than last year’s pace of 2.23 million metric tons (mt) and the value rose 7% to $6.36 billion.
September pork exports to leading market Mexico totaled 91,492 tons, up 3% from a year ago, although the value fell slightly to US$206.6 million. Exports to Mexico remained at a record pace through September, up 7% in volume (850,204 tons) and 12% in value (US$1.89 billion).
Thanks to outstanding growth in Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua, pork exports to Central America in September rose 36% year-on-year to 12,895 tons valued at US$41.9 million (up 42%). Exports to the region are also on pace for a record 2024, with shipments through September up 23% to 109,634 tons and value up 33% to US$344 million.
Steady growth in the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore drove pork exports to the ASEAN region to 7,701 tons in September, up 83% from a year earlier, and value rose 82% to US$16 million. Domestic production in the region continues to be affected by African swine fever, driving strong import demand. U.S. pork is capturing market share previously held by European suppliers, although EU exports to the region have recovered to some extent this year. As of September, U.S. exports to the ASEAN region were up 17% from last year to 61,320 tons, and the value was up 8% to $134.2 million.
September was another excellent month for pork exports to Colombia, which are on pace for a record 2024. Shipments in September were up 43% from last year to 10,924 tons valued at US$33.4 million (up 22%).
Pork exports to China/Hong Kong in September were the largest in 15 months at 41,405 tons, up 11% from a year ago, and the value also rose 11% to US$97.8 million. Exports to the region in January-September remained well below last year’s 344,432 tons (down 11%), valued at US$824.1 million (down 17%). Pork meat accounts for more than 70% of export volume to China/Hong Kong, which is the largest destination for this product. As of September, pork meat exports to the region totaled about 240,000 tons, down just 5% from a year earlier.
