US calls on UN to put pressure on Russia to extend grain deal
Russia continues its attempts to turn food into a weapon of war. To prevent this, the UN countries must prevent the Kremlin’s attempts to completely block the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
This call was made by U.S. Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield during the June 23 meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine.
“Colleagues, we must force Russia to stay in the Black Sea Grain Initiative,” the U.S. representative emphasized.
She emphasized that the longer the war lasts, the more the Ukrainian people and the whole world will suffer.
“The consequences of this war are now being felt all over the world. Why? Because President Putin is using food as a weapon of war and thus exacerbating the global food security deficit,” said Thomas-Greenfield.
According to her, Russia’s actions to block grain supplies have particularly affected countries in Africa and the Middle East. And now it is “deeply disturbing” that Russia is once again threatening to withdraw from the initiative.
