Ursula von der Leyen warned Trump against imposing tariffs on EU goods
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned US President Donald Trump against imposing new tariffs on European goods.
“If we are deliberately treated unfairly or unjustifiably, the European Union will react with all determination,” von der Leyen said on Tuesday night, February 4, after a meeting with EU heads of state and government in Brussels.
According to her, the European Union is “prepared” for such a development. At the same time, von der Leyen stressed that an escalation in relations must be prevented by starting a dialogue as soon as possible.
“Tariffs increase the cost of doing business, hurt workers and consumers, create unnecessary disruption to the economy and fuel inflation. We don’t see any good in that,” she explained.
Trump recently said that tariffs on the EU – and potentially the UK – “are definitely going to happen.” He repeated previous complaints about the large US trade deficit with the bloc and his desire for Europe to import more US cars and agricultural products.
Meanwhile, Canada has secured a 30-day delay in US tariffs. In return, the country will implement a $1.3 billion border security plan.
Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced an agreement with the US to temporarily suspend the tariffs.
In turn, China has announced measures in response to US tariffs imposed against the country. Beijing has decided to impose duties of 15% and 10% some American goods, launch an antitrust investigation against tech giant Google, and restrict exports of key minerals from China.
Further development of the grain sector in the Black Sea and Danube region will be discussed at the 22nd International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN. EUROPE-2025 on February 13 – 14 in Prague.
