Ukrainian grain was delivered to Nigeria as part of Grain from Ukraine
The vessel with Ukrainian grain sent from Samsun, Turkey, under the Grain from Ukraine program has reached Nigeria. This was announced by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Turkey Vasyl Bodnar.
“The ship Fuat Sezgin set sail for Nigeria on December 30. According to our data, it arrived at the port of Harcourt on January 22 and has already started unloading. The Grain from Ukraine program initiated by President Zelenskyy for the most needy countries is successfully continuing and, as we can see, has its practical implementation,” said Vasyl Bodnar.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey noted that the grain sent to Nigeria was stored in warehouses in Turkey under the UN World Food Program and was sent to Africa under the Grain from Ukraine program from the Turkish port of Samsun.
“This program (Grain from Ukraine – ed.) demonstrates how Ukraine, third countries and the UN can work together to prevent manipulation and blackmail with food by the aggressor country and help those countries that need food support the most. The alternative maritime corridor is effective, and the Grain from Ukraine program is working. Russia’s attempt to create a historical déjà vu, this time by scaling the famine to the whole world, did not work,” said Vasyl Bodnar.
According to the diplomat, the best response to Russia’s attempts to counteract the export of food from Ukraine is international solidarity and joint efforts of countries and international organizations to ensure the safety of navigation in the Black Sea.
According to the European Council, the UN World Food Program, which is the largest humanitarian organization in the world, stockpiled grain during the Black Sea Grain Initiative. As of July 2023, 80% of WFP’s grain stocks were purchased from Ukraine, compared to 50% before the war. Over the course of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, more than 725 thousand tons of wheat have been shipped from Ukrainian ports to Ethiopia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, and Djibouti.
