Ukrainian apples will be exported to Canada for the first time
The first batch of Ukrainian apples this season will go to the Canadian market. This is reported by FreshPlaza.
“We have been preparing for the opening of the Canadian market for several years. The Canadian side has confirmed the conditions, so the first batches of this season will be sent,” said Volodymyr Gurzhiy, head of the Ukrainian exporting company USPA Fruit.
According to him, the apple harvest in the regions of the country varies: “The situation in the main apple regions is different, because the frosts came in several waves and at different stages of flower and fruit development. In some regions, the harvest is normal, and in others it has been halved.”
Gurzhiy noted that the weather during cultivation was favorable for apple trees, which improved their quality. However, farmers are now facing difficult conditions during the harvest – rain and low temperatures, which delay the harvest by two weeks.
“As of today, the harvest is about half way through. Overall, the expected harvest is below the average for the past 10 years, but it is average compared to the past three years,” he added.
Demand for Ukrainian apples is high, especially against the backdrop of a labor shortage and weather challenges: “Buyers are noting the high density, taste and attractive appearance of our apples. All target markets are active, new requests are coming in, while we have to fulfill already agreed contracts.”
He also predicted high apple prices in the 2025/2026 season due to a low harvest, weather conditions and economic factors: “This includes high inflation rates in Europe and the revaluation of the euro against the US dollar, given that the main export markets for our apples operate mostly in USD.”
