Ukraine will increase the area under soybeans and sugar beets and decrease the area under corn in 2024
In 2024, the area under soybeans and sugar beets is expected to increase and the area under corn to decrease. These are the results of the survey on the plans and preparations of agricultural producers for the spring sowing campaign for the 2024 harvest, conducted by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
In particular, 70% of respondents said they plan to increase the area under soybeans. In general, the increase is 21% compared to 2023.
Pulses also remain a priority, with the planted areas under them increasing by 11%, and spring barley – by 7%. Growing interest in barley may be due to the expansion of the geography of sea shipments. Spring wheat plantings will increase by 2%.
In addition, farmers are interested in growing spring rapeseed. Some producers plan to sow rapeseed for the first time. In general, the area under this crop will increase by 24%.
As for sugar beet, 60% of those who sowed the crop last season are going to expand the area slightly, by 17% in Ukraine as a whole.
At the same time, the area under corn will decrease by 9%. The area under sunflower could also potentially be reduced. However, as of today, most farmers have not yet made a final decision on the planted areas of this crop.
In general, in 2024, the area under spring crops may decrease by 0.5 mln ha or 3.7% compared to last season.
