Ukraine. Сrop Conditions, Sowing and Trade
Сrop conditions:
– Sowing is postponed to the late March due to cold weather, in some areas – even to the first decade of April;
– This will allow farmers to better prepare for the fieldwork;
– The actual date will depend on the rate of heat rise and rainfall;
Spring sowing:
In some districts of the Odessa region, spring barley sowing has started. Mass feeding of winter crops has been carried out. Winter crops condition is generally assessed as good and satisfactory. From March 20-21, the average daily temperature all across Ukraine will reach the values necessary to resume vegetation season.
Sowing areas of main agricultural crops for the harvest of 2022 (estimated by UkrAgroConsult) – we expect the largest reduction in areas of sunflower, corn and barley. Detailed forecast is available for subscribers of our Market Reports.
Exports:
Ukrainian grain export through seaports is still impossible.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture Taras Vysotsky, the resumption of exports through Ukrainian seaports after the end of military actions will take not more than 2 weeks.
Exports across the western borders of Ukraine: market operators report 300 K mt of corn crossed the Polish border during March 14-18.
Trade and prices:
- Inactive trade in small batches of grain – from several hundred tons to several thousand
- Grain delivery is limited by logistics problems
- An unusually large gap between seller and buyer prices
- Crushers activity in the western regions and in the center of Ukraine recovers
- Oil crops crushing under tolling contracts and barter transactions are becoming more common, cash payments still prevail
- Deliveries to the EU by land transport is now the only possible channel for sunflower oil exports. The export of large quantities of oil is especially challenging due to logistical problems
- On March 13-14, transactions were registered for the export of sunflower meal and soybeans to the EU states
