Ukraine offers Syria wheat in exchange for phosphates
During a visit to Syria, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed a framework for broader cooperation that includes supplying Ukrainian wheat, promoting drone technologies, and securing access to Syrian raw materials. A key proposal involves exchanging grain and technology for phosphates.
Particular attention was given to Ukrainian drones, which Kyiv is actively promoting in international markets. These technologies could be used not only in defense but also for monitoring, security, and infrastructure, making them relevant for Syria’s economic recovery.
An important element of the initiative is also the effort to curb the sale of stolen Ukrainian grain on global markets. Ukraine is seeking cooperation with partners to improve traceability and reduce pressure from illicit supplies competing with legitimate exports.
In addition, the potential partnership includes ensuring the security and stability of Syrian phosphate supplies, a critical raw material for fertilizer production. This is especially important for Ukraine, which aims to secure reliable inputs for its agricultural sector.
However, implementation may be complicated by the fact that a significant share of Syria’s phosphate industry is influenced by Russian companies, adding geopolitical risks and requiring careful balancing of interests in the region.
Analysts note that this initiative is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to diversify exports, expand into new markets, and combine its agricultural strengths with technological capabilities. Such an approach could strengthen the country’s agri-sector and open new opportunities despite ongoing global competition.
