Ukraine may harvest 3 mln tons more wheat next year than this year – Vysotsky
Ukraine’s wheat harvest could rise to 25 million tons next year due to a larger planted area, First Deputy Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotsky tells Reuters in an interview.
The planted area could reach 5 million hectares in 2025, up from 4.6 million hectares in 2024.
In 2024, Ukraine harvested 22 million tons of wheat, compared to the average pre-war harvest of 25-28 million tons.
“If we take into account the average yield, we would have at least 22 mln tons (of wheat), but with positive weather, it could be 25 mln tons. The area has increased by half a million hectares, which is significant. In fact, it will be up to 5 million hectares,” Vysotsky said.
Vysotsky noted that most of the planted areas have already sprouted, but the harvest will depend on the weather in winter and spring.
“Wheat has grown in all areas, with germination rate over 90%. The question is what will happen next. As of today, there is no apocalyptic scenario,” he said.
According to the deputy minister, the large soybean harvest led to lower prices and farmers will return to corn in 2025.
“We see that corn prices are high, while soybeans are falling because we have an overproduction of soybeans. Corn may add 0.5 million hectares in 2025, and soybeans may lose 0.5 million hectares,” Vysotsky said.
He added that in 2025, the sunflower acreage will remain stable at up to 5.5 mln hectares.
