Ukraine is the main supplier of soybeans to Moldova

An analysis of quantitative indicators of international trade in soybeans in Moldova for the period from 2022 to 2025 (the first 3 months) demonstrates the predominance of import operations over export ones. At the same time, 99.22% of all imports come from one country – Ukraine, which supplied 56.64 thousand tons out of a total import volume of 57.08 thousand tons.
The total turnover for the analyzed period amounted to 71.42 thousand tons, of which 79.9% comes from imports and 20.1% from exports of beans.
Ukraine has consistently been the leader in soybean supplies throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, it accounted for 99.99% of imports (14.84 thousand tons), in 2023 – 97.19% (10.08 thousand tons), in 2024 – 99.50% (30.20 thousand tons), in the first quarter of 2025 – 99.99% (1.51 thousand tons).
The other importing countries were much less important. Germany ranks second with a share of 0.39% of total imports (0.22 thousand tons), with all imports from this country occurring in 2023. Romania is in third place with a share of 0.26% (0.15 thousand tons), with the bulk of imports from this country occurring in 2024.
The geographical structure of soybean exports from the Republic is characterized by higher diversification compared to imports. In the period 2022-2025 (first quarter), exports were carried out to ten countries and amounted to 14.34 thousand tons.
The leader among the countries importing Moldovan soybeans is Romania, which accounts for 49.41% of all exports (7.09 thousand tons). Romania was the main importer in 2022 (2.17 thousand tons, 44.65% of that year’s exports) and in 2023 (4.09 thousand tons, 48.15% of that year’s exports), as well as in 2024 (0.82 thousand tons or 97.29% of that year’s exports).
Lebanon is in second place with a share of 20.88%. Turkey ranks third with a share of 18.00%, while exports to this country were carried out only in 2022.
