Ukraine has increased sugar exports by 17% since the beginning of the season
In the first five months of the 2024/2025 marketing year (September 2024 – January 2025), Ukraine exported over 352 thousand tons of sugar, which is 17% more than in the same period of the 2023/2024 marketing year.
This is stated in the report of the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine “Ukrsugar”.
As noted, the entire exported volume was directed to the world market, while in the same period of the previous marketing year the share of exports to the world market was only 9.5%.
“A significant increase in the share of the world market in sugar exports is the result of the successful efforts of Ukrainian sugar producers to find alternative sales markets due to the restrictions imposed on Ukrainian sugar by the European Union,” the report said.
The main export destinations of Ukrainian sugar were:
- Turkey (19% of total exports),
- Libya,
- Somalia,
- Sri Lanka,
- North Macedonia.
The Association also recalled that from January 1, 2025, the possibility of exporting sugar from Ukraine to the European Union countries was restored. Thus, in the first five months of 2025, Ukrainians will have the opportunity to export 107.3 thousand tons of sugar to the EU.
In the 2024 production season, Ukrainian sugar producers produced 1.8 million tons of sugar. The volume of the domestic market in Ukraine is currently estimated at 900 thousand tons per year.
As reported, according to the results of the 2023/2024 marketing year (September 2023 – August 2024), Ukraine exported 691.8 thousand tons. tons of sugar, of which 77% were sent to the European Union countries, and 23% to the world market.
In early December last year, it was reported that in 2024 Ukraine achieved record figures in some sectors of the agro-industrial complex, in particular, sugar exports are expected to reach 700 thousand tons, which is a record figure for the last 24 years.
As a reminder, the European Union has been implementing a mechanism of protective duties on Ukrainian eggs and sugar since July 2 last year.
