Ukraine expands geography and nomenclature of pea exports
According to the forecast of the Pulses Association of Ukraine, in 2024 domestic farmers will harvest at least 400 thsd tonnes of peas.
“The average yield of peas is 2.3 t/ha, with some producers achieving up to 3 t/ha. Before the war, Ukraine consumed 65-75 thsd tonnes of peas per year, and now it consumes no more than 40 thsd tonnes, and exports the rest,” said the head of the Association A. Skliarenko.
In 2024, it is planned to sow more than 160 thsd ha with peas, but the possibility of exporting them to China and India may encourage farmers to increase the planting area.
Since February, the purchase prices for peas in Ukraine increased by 2-3 thousand UAH/t after India abolished the duty on peas imports until April 30, 2024.
“Pea prices will receive additional support when Ukraine starts supplying peas to the ‘premium’ market of China,” says Skliarenko.
At the same time, analysts report that the growth of pea prices has stopped, and export demand has slightly decreased, which may lead to a decrease in domestic prices.
“Ukraine supplies peas not only to India and China, but also to Pakistan, Turkey, and the EU. Our producers have started selling split peas, which have a higher price and are in demand in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. To boost sales, farmers need to attend international exhibitions, learn from experience and establish contacts,” Skliarenko added.
