UK creates database to track stolen Ukrainian grain

Today, on January 16, 2025, Ukraine and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland signed a 100-year partnership agreement that will strengthen military, economic and humanitarian cooperation.
“Today we have reached a new level of relations, and this is even more than a strategic relationship. We have signed an agreement on a 100-year partnership. We are confident in the independence of our country, and this is something that Ukrainians will never give up. We are confident in our European partners, and this strengthens Ukraine, the UK, and our entire Euro-Atlantic space. This is the basis for the actions of our nations for generations to come,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a press conference.
According to the UK government, the treaty will promote military cooperation in maritime security through a new structure to enhance security in the Baltic, Black and Azov Seas and deter ongoing Russian aggression.
In addition, the document will bring together experts to develop scientific and technological partnerships in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, space and drones.
“A new UK-developed grain verification scheme will also be launched to track stolen grain from the occupied Ukrainian territories,” the statement said.
It is noted that the UK developed the scheme after Ukraine’s request to the G7 to help track grain stolen by Russia from Ukrainian territories, which is then resold.
“Using science to determine where grain was grown and harvested, the UK has developed a database to support Ukraine’s efforts to track and stop the theft of grain from the occupied regions… The database will be handed over to Ukraine from the Environment Secretary in the coming weeks,” the statement said.
