Turkey sets quotas for sunflower seeds and oil imports

The Turkish government has set tariff quotas for sunseed and sunflower oil for 2025, Haberler.com reported.
The quotas will apply to Turkish processors who purchased 1 million tons of sunseed from local farmers between July 1 and November 30, 2024:
- on imports of 1 mln tons of oil sunseed between January 1 and April 30 with a duty of 8%;
- on import of 1,400 thsd tons of unrefined sunflower oil in the period from January 1 to April 30 with a duty of 20%.
Duties on imports of these goods in excess of the quota will amount to 27% and 36%, respectively.
Thus, during the period from January 1 to April 30, 2025, when Turkish sunflower seeds and oil stocks are depleted in the domestic market, imports will be available under the quota with reduced duty.
After April 30, 2025, when the new harvest is approaching, local farmers will be protected from cheap imports, thus preserving their income.
The Turkish government expects that the measure will increase farmers’ motivation to grow sunflower in the 2025-2026 season while meeting domestic demand and preventing possible speculative fluctuations in sunflower oil prices.
