Turkey sets its agricultural priorities for the next 5 years
In April 2025, the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MinAF) convened the 4th Conference of the Agriculture and Forestry Council (AFC), dubbed “Turkey’s Century – Century of Abundance.” Drawing on the views of more than a dozen working groups consisting of public and private stakeholders, the AFC formulated and adopted 86 policy decisions that are intended to serve as a blueprint for the development of the Turkish agricultural sector over the next five years. The AFC is similar to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Outlook Forum, but with a more policy-planning focus. The AFC was previously held in 1997, 2004, and 2019.
At the public release of the AFC results in May, President Erdogan hailed the 86 decisions as a promising step toward transforming Turkey’s agricultural economy into a more globally competitive, climate-resilient, and modernized sector. He emphasized that implementing these solutions is critical to strengthening national security and food security, and noted the recent launch of an “innovative production planning system” that incentivizes farmers to grow certain crops to conserve water resources, the USDA said.
