Trump threatened tariffs on French wines to force Macron to join the Peace Council
US President Donald Trump has said he will impose a 200 percent tariff on French wines and champagne. He said the move would force French President Emmanuel Macron to join Trump’s Peace Council, which is designed to resolve global conflicts.
According to Reuters, when asked by a journalist about Macron’s statement that he did not want to join the council, Trump said: “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he’s leaving office very soon.”
“I’ll put a 200 percent tariff on his wines and champagne, and he’ll join, although he doesn’t have to,” Trump said.
According to a source close to Macron, France is currently considering declining the invitation to join the initiative.
Trump first proposed the Peace Council in September last year, when he announced his plan to end the war in Gaza. Meanwhile, invitations sent to world leaders last week outline a much broader role: ending conflicts around the world. According to a draft charter that the US administration has sent to about 60 countries, member states would have to contribute $1 billion in cash if they want their membership to last more than three years.
On Sunday, governments reacted cautiously to Trump’s invitation, saying the plan could undermine the work of the United Nations.
On Monday, Trump also announced that he had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the Peace Council.
- Bloomberg reported that French President Emmanuel Macron was the first world leader to decline the White House’s invitation to join the Peace Council.
- The draft charter of the Peace Council, which has been leaked to the media, states that the organization should meet at least once a year for voting or at any other time by decision of the chairman – the US president himself.
- The Republican will have the right to approve the agenda, appoint his successor, remove countries from the Council or, conversely, continue their membership. At the same time, the status of a permanent member can be obtained by paying a one-time payment of 1 billion dollars.
