Trump announces 25% tariffs on goods from Canada
US President Donald Trump has announced a 35% tariff on Canadian goods. The new rules are set to take effect on August 1.
The announcement was made in a letter on the Truth Social platform, along with threats to impose 15% and 20% tariffs on more countries. The tariff announcement is just one of about 20 others Trump has issued this week on the subject of tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government would continue to protect Canadian workers and businesses. A 25% tariff is already in place on select Canadian goods.
It is unclear whether the latest tariffs will extend to goods covered by the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Separately, there is a 25% tariff on all non-U.S.-made cars and a 50% tariff on aluminum and steel.
Trump’s letter says the 35% tariffs are separate from the industry levies.
“As you know, there will be no tariffs if Canada or companies in your country decide to build or manufacture in the United States,” Trump said.
He added that the tariffs would be reviewed if Canada was more successful in combating the importation of the drug fentanyl.
“If Canada works with me to stop the flow of fentanyl, we may consider adjusting this letter. These tariffs may be adjusted, up or down, depending on our relationship with your country,” Trump said.
Since Trump returned to the White House, relations between his country and Canada have been strained not only over tariffs but also over the US president’s territorial ambitions. Trump has repeatedly “suggested” that Canada become a US state.
