Total losses of Ukraine’s agricultural sector due to full-scale war amount to $80 bln

The total losses of Ukraine’s agricultural sector due to Russia’s full-scale invasion are estimated at about $80 billion.

This was stated by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Vitaly Koval during the presentation of the World Bank report on losses and needs that arose as a result of the full-scale war launched by Russia against Ukraine.

According to Koval, this figure takes into account not only direct, but also indirect losses: disruption of logistics, reclamation, demining or loss of land, increase in the price of fertilizers and fuel, etc.

“I am convinced that the restoration of the agricultural sector should take place today. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy, together with international partners, is working on various programs to support farmers. An important priority is to help farmers in frontline territories,” Koval emphasized.

According to World Bank experts, Ukraine needs $524 billion to recover.

The priorities include the recovery of housing, energy, and critical infrastructure. A separate area is agriculture.

According to World Bank calculations, direct losses in the agricultural sector amounted to $11.2 billion. A separate item, $700 million, is the cost of irrigation and water resources.

As reported, in 2024, Ukraine exported 78.3 million tons of agricultural products for $24.5 billion – this is 59% of the total value of exported Ukrainian goods.

In 2021, Ukraine exported goods for $68.24 billion, so the share of agricultural exports then was less than 41%.
