The EU has reduced its interest in Ukrainian sunflower meal
One of the main features of 2022 was the massive export of sunflower seeds from Ukraine, which reached 2.754 mln tons. The main importers were the EU countries – more than 70%, Turkey – more than 20%.
This is reported by the press service of the Association “Ukroliyaprom”.
Such an increase in sunflower seed exports has reduced the interest of the EU countries in Ukrainian sunflower meal. Such massive exports of sunflower seeds have unpredictable negative consequences for the industry.
“We believe that one of the reasons for such massive exports of sunflower seeds was the fact that Ukraine did not use the opportunities to apply special protective measures in the form of an additional fee when exporting sunflower seeds to the EU in volumes exceeding 100 thousand tons in accordance with the provisions of Article 31 of Title IV and Annex 1-D to the Association Agreement, which provides that Ukraine may apply special measures to export certain types of goods that are currently subject to export duties, including sunflower seeds.
It should be borne in mind that by exporting sunflower seeds from Ukraine in sufficient volumes to meet the needs of the EU and other countries, we lose the market for sunflower oil and meal in these countries,” Ukroliyaprom states.
