This year, the area under spring wheat is expected to increase by 28% to 222.8 thsd ha. Such changes in the structure of crops correspond to the stable demand for wheat from processing companies and exporters.

This was reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

According to AgroTimes, the projected increase in the area under spring wheat in 2025 is due to several key factors:

  • Weather risks for winter wheat: mild winter with frequent thaws and lack of snow cover led to the weakening of some winter crops, especially in the central and northern regions.
  • Soil moisture deficit: due to low precipitation in winter and spring, some farmers will be forced to replant the dead winter wheat areas with spring wheat.
Higher demand for wheat from processors: mills are increasing flour production, which encourages farmers to increase the area under wheat.
  • Ukrainian wheat remains competitive: despite the war and difficult logistics, Ukraine maintains strong positions on the global market. Demand for high-quality spring wheat is expected to remain high in 2025.
  • Competitors’ problems: Due to climatic factors and the economic situation, some major exporters (e.g. Argentina) may reduce wheat supplies, which will give Ukraine more opportunities for exports.
  • Farmers who did not risk sowing winter wheat due to unstable conditions (in particular, lack of precipitation during the optimal period for sowing winter wheat) decide to increase the area under spring crops.
  • The best option in case of uncertainty: spring wheat is a good alternative for farmers who have not yet decided on the crop to be planted on their fields.

Further development of the grain sector in the Black Sea and Danube region will be discussed at the 23 International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN.KYIV on April 24 in Kyiv.
